Know why you are going
The temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari combine monumental architecture with the modern story of rescue and relocation. The Ministry places Abu Simbel within the wider Nubian heritage landscape extending toward Philae. This is a visit with both ancient and modern context.
If royal imagery, architecture or the rescue campaign interests you, give the visit enough time for those questions. If your main priority is a relaxed Aswan stay, it is reasonable to compare the excursion with another day by the Nile.
Compare the full transport plan
A road excursion involves a long return drive. A flight option, when available, still includes airport processes and transfers. Compare hotel-to-hotel time, not merely flight time against driving time.
Ask who meets you at each stage, where guiding begins, which admissions are included and how much time is available at the site. A private vehicle and a private guide are separate arrangements unless both are specified.
Protect the day around the excursion
Agree pickup and planned return before booking another activity. Weather, road conditions, operations and queues can affect timing. A tight international or domestic connection on return creates a risk that a more generous itinerary avoids.
Discuss breakfast, drinking water and rest stops. Travelers with children or discomfort on long drives should judge the whole day honestly rather than focusing only on time at the temples.
What to do once you arrive
Take time to look at the façades before entering, then follow the current site rules for interiors and photography. Ask for the historical explanation at a point where you can hear and concentrate, not while hurrying through a queue.
Back in Aswan, leave the evening flexible. A well-paced excursion does not need a second major outing attached to prove that the day was worthwhile.
